Outgoing Japanese Ambassador Confirms Japan's Continued Support of Cambodia

PHNOM PENH: Mikami Masahiro, the outgoing Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia, stated that his diplomatic mission in the Kingdom went well, thanks to the support and love of all public and private institutions in Cambodia. He affirmed that Japan will continue to support Cambodia in various fields, as it is currently also assisting the country in training its players in preparation for the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games next year.

Ambassador Mikami Masahiro paid a farewell visit to Prime Minister Hun Sen on Thursday, 8 December 2022.

During the meeting, the Japanese Ambassador congratulated Prime Minister Hun Sen on successfully hosting the ASEAN Summit and related summits, as well as in successfully controlling the spread of Covid-19 in Cambodia. He also expressed his respect for the Prime Minister’s leadership, firstly for leading Cambodia to peace and allowing the country to develop and progress greatly over the past 30 years, secondly for his position on the Russia-Ukraine war, thirdly for his efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in Myanmar, and fourthly for strengthening and promoting relations between Cambodia and Japan to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership next year.

In response, Prime Minister Hun Sen thanked Ambassador Mikami for the many joint activities conducted between Cambodia and Japan, including: the joint promotion of upgrading relations to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership; arranging for two Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Froce ships to dock in Cambodia; arranging for a meeting between Prime Minister Hun Sen and the Prime Minister of Japan once a year; the several exchange of visits, including the visit of Lt. Gen. Hun Manet; promoting Japanese investment in Cambodia; organizing Minebea's anniversary; and promoting all Japanese projects in Cambodia so that they can run smoothly even in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, Prime Minister Hun Sen underlined that “the principle of law is different from gratitude,” and as for the Myanmar crisis, he said Cambodia has done its best to help Myanmar return to normal, and now it is Indonesia’s turn to continue the efforts as the next ASEAN Chair.

Finally, Prime Minister Hun Sen wished Ambassador Mikami more success in his future missions.
